🧀 The Ingredients
You only need a handful of everyday deli and pantry staples to achieve that irresistible balance of savory, smoky, and tangy flavors in every single bite. Find ingredient notes (including substitutions and variations) below.

📝 Ingredient Notes and Substitutions
- Pulled Pork: Use plain, un-sauced pulled pork—whether it’s leftovers from weekend barbecue, slow-cooker pork, slow-cooker carnitas, or store-bought shredded pork. A quick warm-up in a skillet with garlic, cumin, and a splash of fresh orange juice gives it that warm Mojo-style flavor.
- The Rolls: Classic Hawaiian sweet rolls provide that signature sweet-and-savory contrast that makes these sliders so addictive. If you prefer a less sweet sandwich, mini brioche buns or slider-sized potato rolls work wonderfully.
- The Ham: Thinly sliced deli ham is best here so you can fold it to create nice, textured layers. Smoked ham, tavern ham, or Black Forest ham will add a great layer of smokiness, but honey ham is great if you love a touch of sweetness.
- Pickles: Standard dill pickles are essential for that classic Cuban tang. Sandwich-cut pickle planks are easiest to layer, but standard dill sandwich chips work just fine.
- Swiss Cheese: Swiss provides the signature nutty flavor and superior melt factor for a true Cubano. If you want to elevate things, Gruyère is an incredible alternative, or you can swap in mild provolone if you aren’t a fan of Swiss.
- Mustard: Traditional Cuban sandwiches call for standard yellow mustard for that sharp, bright vinegary kick. However, if you prefer a little more spice or sophistication, Dijon or stone-ground mustard is an easy 1:1 swap.
🔥 Tips and Tricks for Perfect Cuban Sliders
- Build the Cheese Barrier: Place cheese directly onto the bottom rolls before adding the meats. As it melts, it locks out excess moisture and prevents soggy bread.
- Dry the Pickles: Always pat pickle slices dry between paper towels before layering. Removing that excess brine keeps your sliders perfectly crisp.
- The “Cuban Press” Finish: Mimic a traditional plancha by gently pressing the warm sliders down with a wide spatula right when they come out of the oven to compact the layers.
- Bake Covered First: Keep the rolls covered with foil for the first 15 minutes so the cheese melts completely, then uncover to let the sweet roll tops brown without burning, usually another 5 minutes. Keep an eye on them; Hawaiian rolls will burn quickly!
- Use a Long Serrated Knife: Keep the slab of rolls intact and use a long bread knife with a gentle sawing motion to slice horizontally in one clean pass.
- Prep Ahead for Parties: Assemble the sliders up to 6 hours ahead and keep them refrigerated. Brush on the warm butter glaze just before baking, adding 2 to 3 minutes to the covered bake time.
👩🏼🍳 How to Make Melty Cuban Sliders

- Step 1: Heat the oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the garlic and sauté for a few minutes. Stir in the pork, orange juice, cumin, oregano, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Cook, stirring frequently, for about 3 minutes. Set aside.

- Step 2: Using a long serrated knife, slice the entire slab of rolls horizontally in half, keeping the individual rolls connected so you have one large top sheet and one bottom sheet.

- Step 3: Spray a 9×13″ baking dish with cooking spray (or grease with butter). Add the lower half of the buns, then top with a layer of Swiss cheese and folded ham slices.

- Step 4: Top with the shredded pork and then add a layer of the pickles.

- Step 5: Top with another layer of Swiss cheese slices.

- Step 6: Spread a layer of yellow mustard over the cut side of the top layer of the buns.

- Step 7: Mix the melted butter with the Dijon, Worcestershire, onion powder, and garlic powder. Place the top layer of buns over the layers and then brush the glaze over the tops of the buns. Liberally sprinkle on the everything bagel seasoning (or poppy seeds).

- Step 8: Loosely cover with foil and bake at 350°F for 15 minutes; remove the foil and bake for another 5 minutes. Remove from the oven and let rest for a few minutes. Slice and serve at once.
🍽️ How to Serve
- Let Them Rest First: Give the baked sliders 3 to 5 minutes to set before slicing. This keeps the warm cheese from oozing out entirely and ensures clean, picture-perfect cuts.
- Serve Pull-Apart Style: Transfer the warm, sliced slab directly onto a large wooden board or platter so guests can pull individual sliders apart for that irresistible cheese stretch.
- Add Classic Cuban Sides: Pair them with crispy plantain chips (mariquitas), yuca fries, or a side of seasoned black beans and rice.
- Cut the Richness with a Crisp Salad: Serve alongside a crisp green salad with a citrusy vinaigrette or a tangy, vinegar-based coleslaw to balance the rich, savory meats and butter glaze.
- Offer Extra Sauces for Dipping: Set out small ramekins of spicy brown mustard, extra yellow mustard, or a simple garlic-citrus mojo aioli for dipping.
🙋🏽♂️ Frequently Asked Questions
Yes! Assemble the sandwiches completely in your baking dish without the melted butter glaze, cover tightly with foil, and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. When ready to serve, whisk together the savory butter mixture, brush it over the top, and add an extra 3 to 5 minutes to the covered bake time.
Two simple steps make all the difference: thoroughly pat the pickle slices dry with paper towels to remove excess brine, and always place a layer of Swiss cheese directly onto the bottom bread before adding the meats. The melted cheese creates a barrier that prevents moisture from soaking into the rolls.
Hawaiian sweet rolls are the go-to choice because their subtle sweetness balances the rich, salty pork and tangy pickles. If you prefer a less sweet sandwich, mini brioche buns or slider-sized potato rolls work beautifully.
For the crispiest results, place the sandwiches on a baking sheet, tent them loosely with foil, and warm at 350°F (175°C) for 8 to 10 minutes until heated through and the cheese is melted again. Avoid the microwave, which tends to make the bread rubbery.

Notes
- Pulled Pork: Use unsauced pulled pork or carnitas for this recipe. Avoid pulled pork that is already tossed in sweet BBQ sauce, as it will clash with the traditional mustard and pickle flavors.
- Prevent Soggy Rolls: Thoroughly pat pickle slices dry with paper towels, and always put down the bottom layer of cheese before adding the meats to create a moisture barrier.
- Roll Varieties: Hawaiian sweet rolls offer a delicious sweet-and-savory contrast, but slider-sized brioche or potato rolls are great alternatives if you prefer a less sweet sandwich.
- 2 tbsp poppy seeds
- 1 tbsp white sesame seeds
- 1 tbsp black sesame seeds (or use more white if you don’t have black)
- 1½ tbsp dried minced garlic (flakes, not powder)
- 1½ tbsp dried minced onion (flakes, not powder)
- 1 to 1½ tsp coarse sea salt or flaky salt (like Maldon), to taste
- Make-Ahead: You can assemble the sandwiches up to 24 hours in advance without the butter glaze. Cover tightly and refrigerate. Brush on the warm glaze right before baking and add 3 to 5 extra minutes to the covered bake time.
- Storage & Reheating: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat loosely covered with foil at 350°F (175°C) for 8 to 10 minutes until warmed through and crisp.
