🍯 The Ingredients
This recipe combines creamy pantry staples with bright citrus and a hint of smoky heat to create a perfectly balanced sauce that rivals any high-end steakhouse version. Find ingredient notes (including substitutions and variations) below.

📝 Ingredient Notes and Substitutions
- Mayonnaise: For the creamiest texture and most authentic restaurant flavor, use a high-quality, full-fat mayonnaise. If you want a lighter version, you can swap half of the mayo for plain Greek yogurt or sour cream, though it will be significantly tangier.
- Honey: Use a mild liquid honey for easy mixing; if you are looking for a vegan alternative, agave nectar or maple syrup can be used, though the flavor profile will shift slightly.
- The Mustards: The combination of Dijon and yellow mustard is essential for depth; however, if you prefer a coarser texture, you can substitute the Dijon with stone-ground mustard.
- Lemon Juice: Freshly squeezed lemon juice provides the best bright acidity, but apple cider vinegar or white wine vinegar can be used as a 1:1 replacement in a pinch.
- Whole Milk: This is used strictly to adjust the consistency; omit it entirely for a thick dipping sauce, or swap it with heavy cream for extra richness or a splash of water for a dairy-free thinning agent.
- Spices: Smoked paprika adds a subtle woodsy undertone that sets this apart from basic recipes, while the cayenne pepper is meant to enhance the other flavors rather than provide heat—feel free to adjust the “zing” to your preference.

Absolutely; simply use a plant-based mayonnaise and replace the milk with a splash of water or unsweetened almond milk to achieve your desired consistency.
While it contains a pinch of cayenne and smoked paprika, the primary flavor profile is sweet and tangy rather than hot. You can easily omit the pepper if you prefer a completely mild dressing.
For a thick dip, omit the milk (or water). For a more pourable dressing, add a splash of milk to the sauce. The dressing will thicken somewhat after it chills.

The Best Restaurant-Quality Honey Mustard Dressing
Video
Equipment
- 1 medium bowl for mixing
- 1 whisk or fork/spoon
- 1 jar with lid, or container with lid
Ingredients
- ½ cup mayonnaise
- 3 tablespoon honey
- 2 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice fresh, usually from one half of a lemon
- 1 teaspoon whole milk or water, see NOTES
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ¼ teaspoon smoked paprika
- ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
- salt and pepper
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, whisk the mayonnaise, honey, Dijon mustard, yellow mustard, lemon juice, milk (if using), garlic powder, paprika, cayenne, and a pinch each of salt and pepper until fully combined.½ cup mayonnaise, 3 tablespoon honey, 2 tablespoon Dijon mustard, 1 tablespoon yellow mustard, 1 tablespoon lemon juice, 1 teaspoon whole milk, ½ teaspoon garlic powder, ¼ teaspoon smoked paprika, ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper, salt and pepper
- Transfer to a jar (or container) and cover. Serve at once, or better, chill for at least one hour. Give the jar a good shake (or stir) before serving.
Notes
- Adjusting Thickness: For a thick, rich consistency perfect for dipping chicken tenders or pretzels, omit the milk (or water) entirely. Only add the liquid if you prefer a thinner, pourable dressing for salads.
- Chill Before Serving: For the best flavor, let the dressing rest in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. This allows the spices to meld and the mustard’s sharpness to mellow slightly.
- Storage: Store any leftovers in an airtight container or mason jar for up to two weeks. If the dressing separates slightly while sitting, simply give it a quick stir or shake before using.
- Customizing Heat: The cayenne pepper provides a very subtle depth. If you prefer a “spicy” honey mustard, feel free to double the cayenne or add a dash of your favorite hot sauce.
