Joe T. Garcia’s Mexican Restaurant

If you’re looking for that one defining TexMex restaurant in the U.S…look no further…head to Fort Worth, Texas, to Joe T. Garcia’s Mexican Restaurant. This place is steeped in such incredible history…it is truly one-of-a-kind.  I (Kris) have been loving this place since I was a toddler.  I introduced it to The Loon many years ago, and he agrees…there’s just no better place to get amazing TexMex, margaritas…and pure good fun.

Joe T’.s opened on July 4th, 1935.  It has remained a family tradition ever since.  Joe T., his wife, Jessie, and their five children ran the business with love and a dedication to perfection.   In 1953, Joe T. sadly passed on.   His wife and youngest daughter, Hope, took over the reins of running the restaurant.  And wow, oh wow, did it become an institution for amazing TexMex cuisine…and amazing family fun.  Now days,  the restaurant will serve over 1,200 customers on any given day.  Yes…it’s that good.

The menu remained simple:  Enchilada dinner, which included two cheese enchiladas,  tacos, refried beans, Mexican rice, fresh guacamole,  fresh-made corn tortillas and, of course, the classic Joe T. salsa and chips, and nachos.  In the early days, you could order your dinner with nachos…or without nachos.  In 1982, Joe T.’s introduced chicken and steak fajitas.   I must say, there is nothing I love much more in this world than fajitas…but to this day…for over 40 years…I have never ordered anything at Joe T’s other than the Enchilada Dinner.  Why mess with a classic?  That’s how good they are.

Oh…and trust us when we tell you…no one make s a better margarita than the Joe T. Garcia family.

Joe T.’s doesn’t take reservations unless your party is over 20.  But because the patio is so huge…the wait is not that bad.  Just order a pre-dinner margarita while you wait, and you’ll be happy thinking of what’s about to come.   One other note:  Cash only…but there is a ATM on site.

  • The only thing that I would say to correct you is that Joe T’s can seat up to 1,200 at any time. They serve way more customers than that daily. Another tip, go in groups larger than 10 and less than 15. Every time that I have had a party of that size, we were seated immediately, no matter how long the lines have been.
